What is a “Godzilla” El Niño - and Is Your Home Ready?
You’ve likely heard chatter about the predicted “Godzilla” El Niño this winter—but what makes it different from a typical El Niño, and what could it mean for our community?
El Niño occurs when ocean temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific rise above average, influencing weather patterns around the world. The nickname “Godzilla” El Niño refers to an exceptionally strong event, when ocean temperatures can climb 2°C (3.6°F) or more above normal.
Strong El Niño events can shift the path of winter storms and increase the likelihood of wetter conditions in parts of California. But El Niño isn’t a storm itself, and even a record-breaking event doesn’t guarantee heavy rainfall or flooding in the Tri-Valley.
Winter storms bring much-needed water to our reservoirs and groundwater basins, but these heavy storms can also create problems—like rapid creek rises, downed trees, sudden localized flooding, and runoff issues, even after a storm has passed, as saturated soils prevent excess water from being absorbed.
That’s why Zone 7’s flood protection team works year-round to maintain 37 miles of local streams and flood channels across the Tri-Valley—clearing vegetation and debris, repairing storm damage and maintaining infrastructure to help reduce flood risk.
The bad news? We can’t predict exactly what this winter will bring. but we can prepare for it!
The good news? We can prepare for it! Being flood-ready doesn’t have to be overwhelming – it starts right in your own backyard! And Zone 7 is here to help you stay flood-ready all season long!
