Planning for the Chain of Lakes

Overview

The current and future Chain of Lakes are valuable water management tools for Zone 7. Zone 7 currently owns Cope Lake and Lake I and uses these lakes for groundwater recharge Zone 7 will eventually acquire additional lakes and use those for water supply reliability and flood management. Zone 7 values multi-benefit uses of our property and has always supported cities and park districts using our facilities for recreational purposes if they don’t interfere with our mission.

The Chain of Lakes actively interacts with our groundwater basin. Zone 7 receives about 20% of its water from the groundwater basin and this important source of water is one of our primary sources of safe drinking water during droughts. To maintain water quality, active recreation will likely not be a compatible use.

The Chain of Lakes Conveyance System Project is Zone 7’s proactive solution to secure our water future. By capturing excess water in wet years and storing it right here in our community, we can build a resilient lifeline that will support the region’s water needs for generations to come.

Proposed Extension of El Charro Road

Zone 7 recognizes that an extension of El Charro Road from Stanley Boulevard to I-580 has been included in regional plans.

Protection of the water quality of Cope Lake, Lake H, and Lake I and maintaining the integrity of the quarry lakes and the quality of the underlying groundwater basin is of utmost priority to Zone 7’s water management mission.
